Soccer teams proactive in their charitable giving

Of the many foreign teams that have arrived in South Africa, some are not just here to play a good game. They also give of their time and resources in order to better the lives of South Africans.

The German team has bought 300 tickets for each of its three World Cup Group D matches to be distributed to local schoolchildren in South Africa. Children from poorer areas in Durban, Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg will be accompanied by teachers to these matches. They will be driven by bus to the stadiums where food will be provided for them, and then they will be transported home.

The French soccer team is based in Knysna for the duration of the Soccer World Cup. The French football federation was due to donate R930 000 to be used for the renovation of a pitch when it visited a township in Knysna yesterday.
