On the 31st of May 2010, Port Elizabeth officially opened its new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes. These lanes will run in Harrower Road, Govan Mbeki Avenue and Kempston Road.
The funding for the construction came from national government. New buses have been bought by the Nelson Mandela Municipality to be used as shuttles during the World Cup period. After the World Cup, these buses will be used to provide a more efficient public transport system to Port Elizabethans.
The construction of the special BRT lanes is only the first phase in a plan to upgrade Port Elizabeth’s transport system. These lanes will eventually be extended to reach areas as far as Cleary Park, Greenacres and Motherwell.
Bus stations located between transport lanes will be constructed after the World Cup. This will make access to tickets easier for commuters. Passengers will be able to buy their tickets at these stations. This will ensure efficient boarding of the buses, and that the drivers will no longer have to concentrate on issuing tickets to boarding passengers.
Undoubtedly, this new BRT system will be very beneficial to Port Elizabethans. An efficient public transport system will encourage commuters to use the BRT system. This will help make Port Elizabeth a greener city and preserve its image as one of the cleanest cities in South Africa. Commuters will also save money as the public transport will undoubtedly be more affordable than the price of filling an individual fuel tank.
Shuttling back and forth
During the World Cup, shuttles from park-and-ride stations to the stadium will function on match days. The three park-and-ride stations are situated at:
-The King’s Beach parking area, Humewood
-St George’s Park Fan Fest
-Andrew Rabie High School
Shuttles to the beachfront hotels from the airport will run on a 24-hour basis. Buses to the Fan Fest will function from 9:00am to 1:00am every day. The cost of the shuttle service is R5. Added to the Algoa buses, 168 minibus taxis have been contracted to act as shuttles during the World Cup period.
