With Masifunde, the Cup reaches the township gate

In celebration of the 2010 Soccer World Cup, Masifunde, a non-profit and non-governmental organization, has initiated a programme entitled “Masifunde 2010… be part of the game!” Its goal: to bring the soccer into Walmer Township in Port Elizabeth.

“Let us learn” is the Xhosa translation of Masifunde, the organization working in the Walmer Township in Port Elizabeth. With the arrival of the 2010 World Cup, the people from Masifunde have decided to broaden their horizon.”Let us play” could be their new motto.

There are three different activities on offer that the public are encouraged to become involved in:

The World Cup Studio – This has been organized by the children within Walmer Township. All World Cup games are being shown on a big screen in the Xolelanani Youth Centre. An exciting opportunity, this is not only a great way to cheer one’s favourite teams on, but to also witness some dancing, singing and other entertainment from the young artists of Walmer Township who perform on stage.

Presentation – Masifunde offers deep insight into South Africa for all interested guests and journalists throughout the World Cup. This informative ‘journey’ through this democratic country promotes education as the key to fighting against poverty, and show the diversity of life in a township.

Township Visit – Join in on a half-hour walk through Walmer Township. South African team members serve as tour guides, explaining more about township life, and visitors are able to see for themselves the diversity, friendliness and open-minded and open-hearted nature of the locals by visiting one of the families who are supported by Masifunde.

Education as a weapon
Masifunde Learner Development was founded in 2003. Most of its multi-national team are volunteers, made up of a group of university students, recent graduates and professionals.

The Masifunde people have dedicated themselves to help the disadvantaged children living in the Walmer Township in Port Elizabeth. Through education programmes, the organization assists in the social and personal development of these young children.

They work closely with a number of institutions both locally and internationally, such as the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. They are also associated and cooperate with the South African German Network.

They believe that education can break the cycle of poverty, and they do this by providing high quality education for the young locals. These sponsored children are supported and encouraged to reach their full potential. Masifunde Learner Development embraces the statement Nelson Mandela once made: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
